As we approach World Stroke Day on October 29th, the Kenya Stroke Society is focusing on a critical message: prevention is key. While stroke can affect anyone at any age, up to 80% of strokes are preventable through managing risk factors and adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Understanding your risk is the first step toward protecting yourself and your loved ones.

1. Manage Your Blood Pressure:
High blood pressure (hypertension) is the single most important risk factor for stroke. Often called the "silent killer," it has no symptoms. We urge everyone to get their blood pressure checked regularly. If it is high, work with a healthcare provider to manage it through medication and lifestyle changes.

2. Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet:
What you eat plays a massive role in your health. We recommend adopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while reducing salt, sugar, and saturated fats. Simple swaps, like choosing water over soda or snacking on nuts instead of chips, can make a huge difference.

3. Be Physically Active:
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, like brisk walking, on most days of the week. This helps control weight, lower blood pressure, and improve overall cardiovascular health.

This month, we challenge you to make one small change for your health. Start by scheduling a blood pressure check at your nearest clinic. Your future self will thank you.
